Timing to Use Our Egg Patterns

Many fishermen ask me what time of year to use egg patterns, and when I reply ALL YEAR LONG they look at me in dismay! Yes, of course we have more spawning fish, and more eggs in the water, during the normal cycles of early spring and mid fall typical spawning months, when most of our trout, salmon, and steelhead are spawning (March through April and October through November. But now look closely at the early and late ranges of spawning activity that I have personally witnessed.

I have seen many of the different species of trout start the spring spawning season as early as March, and run as long as mid June. Then, in the fall, I have witnessed spawners in early September, lasting through mid January! Fishermen and fisherwomen, from these two observations alone we cover 9 months of the year! Now let's add the many different types of sucker, whitefish, crayfish, and frog species and their eggs, and you can easily see how a full year long cycle can and does have some sort of eggs travelling along the currents in our rivers and lakes. For an egg to travel along in a river in mid June, July and even August is not an anomaly! I have one friend that consistently fishes and floats the Colorado River all summer long, and he uses a 12 inch dropper with a small egg off his hopper fly riding on top, and usually catches a quarter of his trout on the egg pattern dropper even during the height of the summer months! Try it, you may be surprised!
